MiDatabank Desktop

MiDatabank Desktop

Although Microsoft SQL Server is commonly used by IT departments in organisations around the world, in some cases an IT department may not have the ability to implement such a solution. In this case, it is possible to overcome the limitations of your IT department by using the Desktop version of MiDatabank.

It is strongly recommended that the multi-user, networked version of MiDatabank is used wherever possible, together with a proper networked SQL Server that is administered and maintained by your IT Department. MiDatabank Desktop is a last resort for organisations with no or minimal IT support. In the event of problems with MiDatabank Desktop, it may prove difficult to fix, especially if IT support is limited.

MiDatabank Desktop is the stand-alone version of MiDatabank. It is suitable for installation onto a single PC within a department, and requires no configuration by your local IT support. The data is stored using a special version of SQL Server that is embedded within the software.

The limitations of MiDatabank Desktop are as follows:

  • it can only be installed on one stand-alone computer, and it cannot be networked. This means that access is limited to one simultaneous user, and there is no provision for sharing, allocating and viewing enquiries across multiple computers.
  • importing previous enquiries from a legacy system (DiScan, Pracsys, Cinders, Strix) is not recommended
  • once the software is installed, there is no opportunity for new users to familiarise themselves with the system by creating practice enquiries. (However the demo version can be used for familiarisation).
  • since IT involvement will be minimal, it is anticipated that a MI Pharmacist will be responsible for taking backups of the database on a regular basis: The backup process simply involves copying the MiDatabank Desktop directory and the attachment directory, and copying these to a CDROM, DVD or a file store.
